========================================================= ptetex3-20090610 -- Japanese patch collection for teTeX ========================================================= It is very annoying to build a Japanese TeX system on UNIX, which needs many Japanese patches. `ptetex3' simplifies this difficult job. It provides the necessary patches and automatically applies them to teTeX. You can build a Japanese TeX system with only the following three files. tetex-src-3.0.tar.gz (13Mbyte) tetex-texmf-3.0po.tar.gz (88Mbyte) ptetex3-20090610.tar.gz (6Mbyte) In addition, we make efforts to concentrate the settings for using Japanese fonts in a single location and simplify their use. In other words, we develop `ptetex3' as the Japanese TeX distribution rather than a mere collection of patches. Building a Japanese system means the commands below are established or they can treat Japanese: ptex, platex, platex209, (p)dvips, dvipdfmx, (p)xdvi, jbibtex, mendex, jmpost, updmap, makejvf. System requirements for `ptetex3' correspond with that for the original teTeX. In addition, you may need GNU make and GNU patch. You may also need ghostscript and Japanese fonts. Before you think, you type `make'. If you don't have tetex-src-3.0.tar.gz and tetex-texmf-3.0po.tar.gz, we show the way you get them. In the other case that you have them, please put them in the same directory as ptetex3-20090610.tar.gz are. You don't need the root privilege to compile. You just execute $ make in a command line. Installation image is arranged under `/var/tmp' directory. Then fix font settings. By execution of $ make font the system searches Japanese fonts for use xdvi and CMaps for use dvipdfmx automatically and asks you whether to create symbolic links. If the system don't have essential CMaps, they are installed. You may check success of the compilation by the following command: $ make test Next, let's install properly if compilation was successful. Since they are installed under `/usr/local/teTeX' by the default, you probably need root privilege. $ su # make install Finally, modify the PATH environment variable: % export PATH=/usr/local/teTeX/bin:$PATH (for sh/bash user) % setenv PATH /usr/local/teTeX/bin:$PATH (for csh/tcsh user) (do not forget `rehash' when you use csh/tcsh.) If you want to make these changes permanently, add the commands described above to `~/.bashrc' and/or `~/.tcshrc' (only for your use), and/or to `/etc/profile.d/tetex.sh' and `/etc/profile.d/tetex.csh' (for common use). These settings come to be valid when an user logs-in the next time. In case errors occurred during installation, fix customizations in the file `../my_option'. Please refer to `my_option.sample' to see what you can set there. If you want to uninstall `ptetex3' system, remove `/usr/local/teTeX' directory. `make uninstall' is the same function. When you would like to embed Chinese and/or Korean (Hangul) in dvipdfmx command, you may need additional CMaps. In that case, please use the file ptetex-cmap-20090506.tar.gz distributed separately. This installs lacking CMaps with automatic check. If your environment has had TeX already installed, take care not to mix them in use. The environment variables like TEXMF should not be set, use the environment variable PATH instead as shown above. If the TeX that you want to use is earlier than the others in the PATH, things will be o.k. ------------------------------------------------------------------- To jump between xdvi and emacs, copy the file, /usr/local/src/tetex-src-*/texk/xdvik/xdvi-search.el to the appropriate place. /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/ seems to be appropriate. However, in the case you want to fix (override) only the personal settings, modifying `~/.Xresources' or `~/.Xdefaults' is proper. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is more detailed. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Usually, the original teTeX's installation process is to do 1. extracting/compiling/installing the executable files' source, tetex-src-*.tar.gz 2. extracting the data file, tetex-texmf-*.tar.gz Moreover, for the installation of Japanese environment, 3. extracting/compiling/installing the executable files' source, ptex-src-*.tar.gz 4. extracting the data file, ptex-texmf-*.tar.gz 5. patching/compiling/installing several kinds of tools 6. setting up Japanese fonts is needed. No. 3 and 4 are not complicated, but 5 and 6 are much more. So the system administrator requires very detailed knowledge of tetex and the interaction of the patches. This Japanese patch collection does that work, that is to say, it has all of the patches and applies them by itself. (It would be simple if we were to distribute patched files as tetex-src and tetex-texmf, but we gave up that plan because the size of files will be too large.) Setting of no. 6 (Japanese fonts) is not perfect, but it works at the least level, with the assumption that commercial fonts are not used. ------------------------------------------------------------------- What the scripts do is the following. When you need to edit them, instead of editing them directly, you should create the file `../my_option' and add settings to it. It can also be reused when the version of ptetex3 changes. 0. `common.sh' Common things in the following scripts are exported. It is read ahead of each file. `my_option' is read if it exists. 1. `1check-archive.sh' This checks whether essential files are not destroyed. tetex-src-*.tar.gz and tetex-texmf-*.tar.gz are absent, it displays how to get them. 2. `2extract-src.sh' This extracts sources of executable files, tetex-src etc. 3. `3extract-texmf.sh' This extracts data files, tetex-texmf etc. 4. `4make-install.sh' This compiles and installs many files. 5. `5macro.sh' This installs additional macros. 6. `6babel.sh' This reconstruct the fmt files to provide correct hyphenation in each language when using the Babel macros with pTeX. 7. `7font-search.sh' This fixes the font settings. 8. `8test.sh' This checks the new TeX system. 9. `9realloc.sh' This installs/uninstalls `ptetex3' system. `make' executes no. 1 through 5 sequentially. When you compile ptetex3 manually, you can extract files by `make x', compile by `make c', and update macros by `make macro'. After `make' succeeds, you may fix the font settings by `make font'. You can also install SAITO Shuzaburo's OTF package by `make otf', but it requires much time and approx. 100MB in disk space. By `make babel', Babel will work correctly. A usability check can be done by `make test'. Lastly, you get root privilege and do `make install'. ------------------------------------------------------------------- We list warning messages that `make test' displays but you need not mind. "LaTeX Font Warning: Some font shapes were not available, defaults substituted. " "Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 364--364" platex command display this. It is normal. "Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion" (p)xdvi display this. It can be avoided by editing resources in `${texmf}/xdvi/XDvi'. "Couldn't allocate enough colors - expect low display quality." (p)xdvi display this. It refers to the number of colors to use to illustrate. Sometimes it doesn't appear if you shut down other applications, but fundamentally, it is from the settings of X. If you use more colors in your Xserver, then it can be avoided. To do this, edit `xorg.conf' or `XF86Config' around here: ---- Section "Screen" ...
